Akali Dal Waris Punjab De has announced Papalpreet Singh, a close associate and long-time aide of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, as its candidate from the Majitha Assembly constituency for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.The announcement was made by the party’s working president and Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, during a programme in the Majitha constituency on Friday.Papalpreet Singh had remained absconding along with Amritpal Singh following the Ajnala police station incident. He was subsequently detained along with Amritpal at Dibrugarh jail in Assam under the National Security Act (NSA) until April 10, 2025. After his NSA detention was revoked, he was shifted to Punjab.Papalpreet was arrested in April 2023 from the Kathunangal area of Amritsar during the crackdown on the ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit. He is believed to have played a key advisory role to Amritpal Singh. A Sikh activist, Papalpreet has advocated the Khalistan movement and has also worked as a freelance journalist. In 2015, he was arrested on sedition charges following a speech at the Sarbat Khalsa.A native of Marari village in the Majitha area, Papalpreet has been involved in various social and religious activities in the region. He had also campaigned to have his village declared drug-free and is known in the area for promoting sports and campaigning against drug abuse.
