Iran on Saturday invoked its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter and warned the UAE that countries allowing their territory and military facilities to be used for attacks against Tehran would have to bear responsibility for the consequences. The sharp warning came at the BRICS Youth and Sports Ministers’ meetings in Visakhapatnam, where an Iranian representative hit back at remarks made by his UAE counterpart and accused the United States of using military bases and facilities in the UAE to carry out attacks against Iran.According to the Iranian Embassy in India, the representative argued that a country allowing its territory, airspace and military facilities to be used for attacks against another state could not evade responsibility for the consequences.Invoking Article 51, the Iranian representative said Iran retained its “inherent right to self-defence against armed attack”.
