Counter Intelligence, Amritsar, has busted an alleged illegal arms smuggling network with the arrest of two persons and the recovery of 10 sophisticated pistols, magazines and 10 live 9mm cartridges.According to the Punjab DGP, preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were allegedly in contact with a foreign-based handler and were receiving consignments of illegal weapons from across the border. The weapons were allegedly meant to be supplied to other parties in Punjab.The operation has brought to light a suspected cross-border arms trafficking network operating through intermediaries in the state. Investigators are now working to establish the network’s forward and backward linkages and identify others involved.An FIR has been registered at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar under relevant provisions of law. The arrested accused are being questioned to ascertain the source of the weapons, the identity of the foreign-based handler and the intended recipients of the consignments.Officials said further investigation was underway to uncover the wider network and determine whether the accused were involved in previous consignments.
