The police used water cannons to stop hundreds of protesting employees from marching towards Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s native village Satauj in Sangrur on Jattvibeday, after a massive rally by the Old Pension Restoration Joint Forum over their demands. The protest was later called off after the district administration arranged a meeting between the forum and the CM on August 27.The rally was held under the joint leadership of state convener Jasvir Singh Talwara, Sukhjit Singh Dimpy and Gurjant Singh Kokri Kalan. The protesters demanded restoration of the old pension scheme, release of pending dearness allowance, cancellation of the trial period and withdrawal of the central pay scale.Forum leaders alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party government had promised before coming to power that the old pension scheme would be restored. They said employees were also awaiting release of DA instalments, while probationary and contractual employees should be regularised in their respective departments. The leaders claimed that despite the government completing four and a half years in office, none of these promises had been fulfilled. After the rally, hundreds of protesters began marching towards Satauj while raising slogans. Police stopped them using barricades and water cannons, leading to a tense standoff. The situation eased after the district administration intervened and arranged a meeting with the Chief Minister for August 27. Following the assurance, the forum members suspended their agitation until further decisions.
