Anita Jairath, newly elected president of the Fazilka Municipal Council, assumed charge as the first woman president of the one-and-a-half-century-old civic body on Monday in the presence of BJP National General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh.Addressing BJP workers, Chugh said the BJP would contest all 117 Assembly seats in Punjab and emerge victorious in the maximum number of constituencies. He claimed that the Congress and the AAP would win only about 10 seats each. However, he did not make any prediction about the Shiromani Akali Dal.Lashing out at the Congress, Chugh alleged that the party was following an agenda reminiscent of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Muslim League’s two-nation theory. He also alleged that the Congress was even ashamed of singing all the stanzas of the national song “Vande Mataram”.Chugh added that Fazilka district had shown the way by electing women presidents of both its civic bodies — Fazilka and Abohar. He said he would take the lead from Fazilka and spread the message of the BJP’s victory across the state. He alleged that the ruling AAP had made every possible effort to prevent the BJP from electing its presidents in both Fazilka and Abohar civic bodies despite having majority by misusing official machinery.Taking a dig at the AAP government, Chugh alleged that the party had virtually ruined Punjab. He claimed that the government had not opened even a single new school, had failed to do enough for cancer patients and that the law-and-order situation had completely collapsed, with 21 grenade attacks reported in the state. He alleged that industry, business, farming have been ruined and the government failed to give DA of the employees. He appealed to the people to make a double-engineered government in Punjab, too, for the development of the state.
