FOOTBALL’S Jamie Carragher has avoided being declared bankrupt after a tax dispute.

The Sky Sports pundit, 48, faced a High Court petition from the taxman after failing to pay a bill said to be between £700,000 and £800,000, the BBC reported.

The case was filed yesterday in London but the ex-Liverpool and England defender’s reps insisted the matter will be settled.

A judge would have declared him bankrupt had he not resolved it.

Carragher is thought to rake in more than £1million a year from TV punditry work.

He also does podcasts and is director of four firms.

Carragher’s spokesman told business newspaper City AM: “This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it.

“It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further and will be resolved imminently.”

HMRC said it could not comment on Carragher’s finances.

It added: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans.

“We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”
