And Roberto De Zerbi’s side are still without a point after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle today.

The Frenchman stepped up to take a free-kick with Spurs already a goal down.

But Tel slipped at the vital moment, resulting in his strike ballooning into the stands.

Furious Spurs supporters raced straight onto social media to hit out at the former Bayern Munich man – and demanded for De Zerbi to drag him off.

One said: “That’s one of the worst free-kicks ever taken in the Premier League.”

Another added: “Funny thing is Tel told Omar Marmoush to f*** off so he can take it and then did that.”

A third noted: “De Zerbi needs to take Tel off right now.”

A fourth chimed in: “Never play Tel again.”

And a fifth savagely claimed: “Mathys Tel is absolutely dreadful.”

Tel, who was substituted soon after, found the net with a brilliant free-kick during Tottenham’s pre-season clash with Sydney.

And the winger went into the campaign having bagged four goals in 31 Premier League appearances last term.

Tel initially snubbed a loan move to Tottenham before making a shock U-turn in the final hours of the winter transfer window last year.

He then made the switch from Bundesliga giants Bayern permanent in the summer.
