Hundreds gathered at Talkatora Stadium on Saturday to pay tribute to former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, turning the ‘Shardhanjali Sabha’ into a large show of public and political support for the convicted leader who passed away on August 20.The presence of three BJP leaders — Timarpur MLA Surya Prakash Khatri, Mangolpuri MLA Raj Kumar Chauhan, and former MLA Dharam Dev Solanki — further brought a fresh political dimension to the event.Notably, they attended the event despite the BJP having reprimanded three of its MPs after they visited Sajjan Kumar’s residence following his death. Action has been taken against three BJP Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi — Kamaljeet Sehrawat of West Delhi, Yogendra Chandolia of North West Delhi, and Ramvir Singh Bidhuri of South Delhi.Asked about the reprimand, Dharam Dev Solanki pointed to Ram Kumar Solanki, who is a pradhan of the Palam Khaap that represents 360 villages and responded on his behalf.“It is a shame that they are being questioned for being at someone’s demise. Dharam Dev is here only in his personal capacity and not as a BJP leader. What if there are two brothers from different parties and one passes away? Should the other not go only because the party won’t allow it? It is about brotherhood and social responsibility,” said Ram Kumar Solanki.The gathering came as the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) criticised Sajjan Kumar’s political legacy. DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka and general secretary Jagdeep Singh Kahlo said Kumar was guilty of the 1984 anti-Sikh killings and could not be forgiven. They also criticised the BJP MPs for visiting his home and recalled former Union Ministers Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj for standing with them in their fight for justice.Sajjan Kumar died on August 20. His son Jagpravesh Kumar, speaking exclusively to The Tribune, said he was there to carry forward his father’s legacy. During the pagdi ceremony, he said he wanted to continue serving society in the manner his father had done.The event also marked huge turnout of Congress leaders, including several from the Delhi unit. As people raised slogans in Sajjan Kumar’s memory, many also paid floral tributes.
