A BRIT man has been jailed after allegedly spitting on a Turkish flag.

The holidaymaker, believed to be Stephen Kerr, 58, had been staying at a popular meditteranean sea resort in Turkey when the chaos unfolded.

The Brit reportedly got into a heated spat with hotel employees – before spitting on the flag hanging in the lobby.

Outraged staff held the Brit and reported him to the police.

Cops raced to the resort in Turkey’s southern Antalya province – a paradise haven of blue seas, beaches and mountains.

Officers cuffed the Brit – in luminous yellow shorts and a blue vest – and escorted him to the Alanya courthouse.

Once there, a judge formally charged the hapless tourist with “insulting the symbols of the state’s sovereignty”.

The holidaymaker needed a translator to give his statement in court.

Kerr has reportedly been locked behind bars in Alanya L-Type Closed Prison.

Under repressive Turkish laws, disrespecting the national flag holds a jail term of up to three years.

The British Embassy in Turkey states on its website that they cannot get people out of prison – even if they are British citizens.

It is unclear precisely when the 58-year-old was arrested.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are supporting a British man arrested in Turkey and are in contact with the authorities.”

The Jattvibe has contacted the British Embassy in Turkey for comment.

Last summer a tourist was blasted by prosecutors for pole dancing on a Turkish flag mast in Cappadocia – a region famed for its hot air balloon excursions.

And earlier this year, a British “drug mule” was arrested and thrown into jail for nearly ten years upon landing at Istanbul airport in Turkey.

Taylor Johnson, 20, was reportedly caught smuggling 19kg of cannabis in vacuum sealed bags from Thailand.

The young Brit claimed he’d been forced to transport the bags by a man who threatened him – and that he had no idea there were drugs inside.

A court in Istanbul nonetheless jailed the Brit for nine years and two months.

Heartbroken family members have claimed Johnson was thrown into an overcrowded cell and beaten up by thugs behind bars.
