Sporting a saffron turban and speaking in fluent Punjabi, BJP president Nitin Nabin launched the party’s ambitious ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’ on Thursday — placing drug abuse, gangsterism, and border security at the heart of its political naarative ahead of the Assembly election.The yatra was launched from Ekta Sthal, the memorial of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.The 13-day campaign targets all 117 Assembly constituencies across 4,000 km via four statewide yatras. The drive will culminate on September 30 in Jalandhar, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to address the concluding rally.By launching the campaign in the border district of Pathankot, the party is tying its social message on addiction directly to national security. Local leaders briefed Nabin on how drones carrying heroin payloads regularly enter from across the border, cementing Punjab’s role as a primary national transit hub for narcotics.“The Chief Minister indulges in empty rhetoric and hands out ‘Tarikh pe Tarikh’, but does nothing tangible to end this crisis,” Nabin said after meeting with families affected by drug addiction. “If we form the next government, we will wipe drugs off the map of Punjab.”Backed by extensive pre-campaign survey data, the party plans to keep drug abuse, gangsterism, and border security at the centre of its election platform.
