YOU may be familiar with the phrase ‘look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves’ but who said it?

It was William Lowndes, more than 300 years ago.

He knew about budgeting having run the economy during the reigns of William III and Queen Anne.

Being careful won’t magic away rising bills but if you watch these small daily spends, you will be in a better position to tackle bigger costs.

LUNCH MONEY: Buying lunch at work can quickly take a bite out of your budget.

If you spend £6 three times a week, switching just one of those meals to a packed lunch could save £312 a year.

DRIP, DRIP SPENDING: Buying bottled water will drain your funds.

Spending £2 on a drink twice a week works out at £208 a year.

Take a reusable bottle and fill it using the Refill app.

BEAN COUNTER: We spend around £6.20 every time we visit a coffee shop, so cutting just one trip a week could save around £322 a year.

That’s equivalent to the average annual standing charges household’s pay for gas and electricity.

BRAND NEW BUDGET: If you swap just six well-known branded products for supermarket own brands, you can easily save £430 a year.

Simply swapping Kellogg’s cornflakes, costing around £2, to Tesco own-brand at 95p will crunch your costs by £55 a year if you do it every week.

FUEL FOR THOUGHT: The price of petrol has passed £1.70 per litre for the first time since August 2022.

Swap short journeys for a brisk walk or bracing bike ride.

Cutting out 20 miles a month in the car could save you £5 on unleaded — or £60 over the year.

CLICK FIX: When you order your weekly groceries to be delivered, costing £4.50 each time, you will fork out £234 over the year.

Switch to click and collect, starting from 50p, and you will spend just £26, saving more than £208 in total.

Just remember to factor petrol in costs if your supermarket isn’t nearby.
