The Natioal Investigation Agency (NIA) is investigating a case involving a handler of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Abdullah (aka Shayari Baj), who is accused of radicalising local youth in Gujarat by distributing extremist literature written by JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar and for trying to set up an active terror network in Gujarat.The NIA has named Abdullah as an accused in the FIR, along with nine others. The agency, which had taken over the case from the Gujarat ATS, had filed the FIR on August 25, where it listed eight locals from Gujarat, the JeM handler as well as a ‘unidentified Kashmiri man’ as the accused.The anti-terror organisation mentioned in its FIR that the “accused in criminal conspiracy with each other and Abdullah, had been actively promoting the JeM’s ideology in Gujarat”.The accused translated extremist books authored by Maulana Masood Azhar, from Urdu into Gujarati, circulated such material through various media platforms, and attempted to radicalise and recruit individuals to join the banned terrorist organisation, the FIR stated.They also received Rs 3 lakh for carrying out activities in furtherance of the terrorist conspiracy. The accused also maintained contact with Pakistan-based JeM operatives and attempted to establish an active JeM network in Gujarat, it added further.While handing over the case to the NIA, the Home Ministry had said that it is related to criminal conspiracy, recruitment to terrorist organisation and propagation of terroris ideology by the cadres of JeM thus threatening the integrity, security and sovereignty of India.Looking at the gravity of the offence, and its national and international ramifications and the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, the NIA was asked to investigate the case by the Home Ministry.The other eight accused named in the FIR are all natives of Gujarat, mostly from Banaskantha and Patan districts of the state.
