The Enforcement Directorate tonight swooped down on the Sector 39 residence of Satyendar Jain, co-incharge of Punjab affairs of the Aam Aadmi Party, and on the Sahnewal residence of a nephew of Housing Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian.The searches at these two places, besides the residence of IAS officer Rajiv Gupta, are part of an operation launched by the ED at the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) on Tuesday morning, making this one of the longest search-and-surveillance operations in the poll-bound state.As the search-and-surveillance operations on multiple targets continued for the second consecutive day today, teams from different units were deployed by the central investigating agency. While over 100 personnel from the ED and a central security force were deployed for the operation at the GMADA office in Phase 8, ED sleuths from different states conducted searches at the offices and residences of AAP leaders and officers, including bureaucrats and technocrats. It is learnt that the entire operation is being closely monitored by top ED officers in Delhi.After the operation was launched at the residence of Jain, a key AAP leader, at his high-security Sector 39 government residence, Aam Aadmi Party leaders got into a huddle. The searches at Jain’s residence were conducted after a different ED team had searched the Sahnewal residence of Gurpreet Singh Saini, nephew of Housing Minister Mundian. The financial transactions of Saini are under investigation.An official statement issued by AAP claimed that Jain was not at his residence when the ED swooped down and that officials broke open the locks to force their way in. The ruling party leaders are reportedly planning to take the fight to the streets on Thursday by holding protests across the state, including outside the GMADA office.An official statement by the party said that, ahead of the elections, the BJP was again resorting to using investigating agencies to create an atmosphere of fear and squeeze resources in an attempt to hinder the running of welfare schemes. “The pressure being built cannot stop the Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana or Punjab’s development. The Bhagwant Mann government runs on the public’s support,” it said.Officials in the ED told The Tribune that what initially began as a probe into the Tirupati Infraprojects Pvt Ltd expanded into alleged money laundering by other companies, including Remigate Buildestates (India) Pvt Ltd, which received pecuniary benefits of Rs 57 crore through the waiver of statutory dues.“We are examining the role of both government officers and their political bosses in the grant of change of land use, the extension of undue favours to private promoters and irregularities in land acquisition and compensation payments through a private consultancy firm,” an officer said.At the GMADA office, ED officials also sought details regarding the terms of appointment of Amarinder Jha, a close associate of Jain, who was allocated an office in the GMADA building. His office was also reportedly searched by the ED officials.“Another IAS officer, who was posted as the Chief Administrator in GMADA recently, will also be questioned soon,” said an ED officer.Meanwhile, the search operations at the GMADA office continued for the second day today, and officers, including Secretary (Housing) Vikas Garg, GMADA Chief Administrator Sandeep Rishi, Land Acquisition Collector Rohit Jindal, Estate Officer Aman Gupta, Additional Chief Administrator Amarinder Singh Malhi, Additional Chief Administrator (Finance) Rakesh Popli and Chief Engineer Ajay Garg, were questioned.The officials were initially questioned jointly and were subsequently taken to their respective offices for further questioning. The agency also retrieved chat records from their mobile phones, according to sources.
