Mystery shrouds the death of Kuljit Singh Sandhu, husband of sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) woman sarpanch Satbir Kaur from Mehmad Mandrawala village in the Ramdas area. An ex-serviceman, Sandhu had been missing for the past two days. He was found dead in Raval village under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday.The family members and relatives of the deceased held a demonstration and raised slogans against the police for its inaction in tracing him. They suspect it to be a murder. The Congress has also raised questions over the functioning of the police.According to the family, Kuljit Singh left his house around 10.15 am on September 21 for taking some certificates from the Fatehgarh Churian centre but did not return. Subegh Singh, brother of the deceased, suspected that Kuljit Singh was killed by unidentified persons. He said he was in contact with the family around noon, after which his phone remained switched on for several hours, but there was no further communication.Daljit Singh, another relative of the deceased, said the residents had yesterday searched the entire area where the body was found today. There was nobody there at that time. Had the body been there for two days, it would have started decomposing, he said.Ajnala DSP Inderjit Singh said the police had filed a missing person’s case on Tuesday and now a murder charge had been added to the FIR. He said the exact cause of death would be known only after the autopsy report was received.Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh “Sukh” Aujla, who visited the bereaved family, questioned the police response and demanded an investigation into the circumstances leading to the sarpanch’s death.Aujla alleged the police failed to take timely action. Kuljit’s phone remained switched on for nearly 14 hours and its location was reportedly showing different areas, including Kamalpur, Pandori and Kot Raizada.He alleged that the circumstances surrounding the death raised the possibility of foul play and said he suspected it was a case of murder.
