A total of 75 NRIs of the Majha region — Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Pathankot and Gurdaspur — put forward their grievances in front of officials concerned, besides Minister for NRI Affairs Dr Ravjot Singh today.NRI Ajaib Singh (75), who had moved to the UK around six decades ago, said the girdawari of his 25 acres of land, which he purchased in 2010, in Gurdaspur’s Dera Baba Nanak had been changed.He maintained that some individuals in connivance with revenue officials were behind this move. He said his relatives grabbed his ancestral land at Shahkot village in Jalandhar.NRI Harpal Singh said the person who sold him his 25 acres of land in Gurdaspur’s Naushehra Majha Singh in 2021 passed away. Later, some people forcibly started cultivating his land. He alleged that they even made forged documents. He lodged a complaint against nine persons; however, the police registered a case against only one person.Dinesh Sharma said his brother-in-law, Ankur Sharma, is harassing her sister, Rupali, for a dowry. He said both of them are now Australian citizens. They migrated to Australia after getting married here in January 2024.NRI Kanwaljit Kaur said her relatives did not give her a share of the ancestral property comprising agriculture and residential plots after her husband, Navtej Singh, committed suicide in 2004. She claimed that he had taken the extreme step after learning about the fraud.Dr Ravjot said Punjabis settled abroad had a deep bond with their soil, culture and heritage and had brought pride to Punjab and India across the world.He said major complaints received from the NRIs pertain to property disputes, documentary discrepancies and matrimonial matters. He said the government was taking action in coordination with the departments concerned for the resolution of their issues. The minister said he was personally monitoring the cases that had been pending since long.
