Xi Jinping (AP file photo) Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called on top officials to address domestic and international challenges “calmly” as the country prepares for its biggest annual political event next week. The world’s second-largest economy is grappling with sluggish domestic demand, a prolonged property sector crisis, and the risk of a rising trade war with Donald Trump-led United States. Xi’s remarks came after his review of a 2024 work report submitted by officials. He urged leaders to “enhance political capabilities” and “calmly respond to challenges brought about by changes in the domestic and international situation,” according to state news agency Xinhua. He also pointed out the need to “promote sustained economic recovery, steadily improve people’s living standards, and ensure social stability.” The upcoming “Two Sessions” event in Beijing will bring together the National People’s Congress and a top political advisory body. Observers are watching closely for potential policy measures to support China’s economy, which has struggled to fully rebound since the Covid pandemic.
