The Amritsar police today busted a Pakistan’s Inter Service Intelligence (ISI)-backed cross-border module which was smuggling arms, ammunition and contraband.Cops arrested five persons who were in close contact with Pakistan-based drug peddler, Rana, an ISI entity, who used to smuggle a number of weapons and drug consignments earlier, the police said.Those arrested were identified as Jobanjit Singh, alias Joban, and Gora Singh of Rangharh village, Shenshan, alias Shalu, and Sunny Singh, alias Ganna, of Rasulpur Kallar in the Mohkampura area here and Jaspreet Singh, alias Motu of Mugal Mangri in Rupnagar district.The operation was carried out in close coordination with Central agencies, said SSP Amritsar (Rural) Maninder Singh.The operation led to the seizure of an assault rifle AK Saiga 308 with two magazines, two Glock pistols 9mm with four magazines, 90 live cartridges of an AK rifle, 10 live cartridges (9mm) and Rs 7.50 lakh of drug money, and an I-20 car and three mobile phones.The SSP said as per preliminary investigations, the intercepted consignment was intended to be delivered to Nav, alias Nav Pandori, a close associate of A-category gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria.The accused were intercepted near Kaler village following a tip-off.Gora and Joban have links with Rana and they had earlier too got smuggled a number of weapons and drugs consignments via drones.A police official said on June 27, Bhagwanpuria’s mother Harjit Kaur and his close associate Karanvir Singh were shot dead by armed assailants in Batala. Later, in a viral social media post, members of the Bambiha gang – Prabh Dasuwal and Kaushal Chaudhry – had claimed the responsibility for the crime. Though the police had not officially confirmed the contents of the post, the Bhagwanpuria gang has also threatened to avenge the death.The police were, meanwhile, on alert over the suspected escalation of the gangwar between the two groups in the coming days.
