EC announces bypolls to six Rajya Sabha seats | India News

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Tuesday announced bypolls to six Rajya Sabha seats, including three from Andhra Pradesh and one each from Odisha, West Bengal and Haryana. Polling will be held for the seats, rendered vacant due to resignation of the respective MPs, on December 20.The three seats in Andhra Pradesh became vacant after the YSR Congress Party MPs representing them — Venkataramana Rao Mopidevi, Beedha Masthan Rao Yadav and Ryaga Krishnaiah — resigned in August and September and switched loyalties to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).Similarly, Sujeet Kumar had resigned from the Rajya Sabha in September after he quit the BJD and joined the BJP. The vacancy in West Bengal was caused by ex-bureaucrat Jawahar Sircar’s resignation in September in protest against the handling of R G Kar rape-cum-murder case. In Haryana, the sole vacancy arose due to Krishan Lal Panwar’s resignation from the Rajya Sabha following his election to the state assembly in October. Panwar is currently a minister in the Haryana govt.
