Reacting to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s announcement for a quick girdawari to assess crop damage caused by recent rains and hailstorms, MLA Sandeep Jakhar said farmers in Abohar and Balluana are still awaiting compensation for losses suffered in August 2025.The MLA explained that last year’s rains and waterlogging caused extensive damage to hundreds of acres of kinnow orchards in the region. He recalled that while orders for a special girdawari were issued at the time, relief has yet to reach farmers even after eight months.Jakhar demanded that the state government demonstrate sensitivity and immediately release the pending relief funds so that farmers can mobilise capital for their next crop.Expressing concern over the current situation, he noted that the wheat crop is ready for harvest, but an adverse weather forecast poses a new threat.“Farmers are already grappling with financial distress, and the fear of yet another blow from nature is haunting them,” Jakhar said.He called on the government to put in place an ‘emergency plan’ to tackle this potential crisis, including availability of tarpaulins and proper drainage systems in grain markets to protect the wheat stock.Jakhar also stressed the need for swift procurement and lifting of the maximum possible amount of harvested crop before the adverse weather sets in. Furthermore, he demanded a special relief package for horticulturists, noting that the damage to orchards has long-term implications. The MLA warned that if the government fails to take timely action, the farmers of this border region will be completely devastated. He urged the Chief Minister to personally intervene and address the concerns of farmers in Abohar and Balluana areas.
