The chasm between the government and the opposition in Parliament looks set to widen with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju today releasing videos of Congress MPs entering the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chamber earlier this week and one of them allegedly making “threatening” gestures. The video shows Congress MPs in a heated conversation with the Speaker and Rijiju, and Congress MP Jothimani pointing a finger towards Rijiju. The incident took place on the day when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey brought books to the House and quoted from those to make adverse remarks against two former prime ministers, both from the Nehru-Gandhi family.Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal, went to the Speaker’s chamber and demanded action against Dubey for his slanderous comments on the grounds that earlier the Speaker had prevented Rahul Gandhi from quoting from a book.Rijiju today criticised the conduct of Congress members, saying it unfolded in the presence of senior leaders of opposition Priyanka and Venugopal.”When we were in opposition we never acted in this manner. Once when we were out of line for demanding execution of Ajmal Kasab, our leader LK Advani reprimanded us. But in Congress, Rahul Gandhi conducts himself casually. We don’t think Rahul Gandhi can improve or that the Congress can change,” Rijiju said.”This is the illegal video clip taken by a Congress MP when 20-25 Congress MPs entered the Chamber of Hon’ble Speaker, abused him and threatened Honb’le Prime Minister. Our party believes in debate & discussion and never encourage MPs to threaten physically,” Rijiju stated with his video post.On Rijiju’s statement, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra later said, “We did not abuse anyone. One or two MPs were agitated, and they expressed it. He also said that I was encouraging them, which is a lie. I was sitting quietly. In the end, I said a few things peacefully.”
