Just days after suspected Kuki militants reportedly carried out a bomb attack on the house of a BSF personnel in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, in which two children aged five months and five years were killed, prominent Meitei organisations on Thursday sought the immediate identification and arrest of the perpetrators. At a press conference held here, the Meitei Heritage Society, Delhi Manipur Society and Delhi Manipur Academics Fraternity, along with other bodies, also called for “conclusive action” to dismantle the infrastructure of Kuki militancy.Speaking at the press conference, Oinam Babuton, the grandfather of the two children, said, “We demand the immediate arrest and exemplary action against the perpetrators, whom we believe are Kuki militants. There has to be an end to Meitei civilians being attacked and killed by these militants.”CM promises stern action in bomb attackManipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Thursday said his government was taking all necessary measures in coordination with the Centre to take action against the perpetrators of the Bishnupur bomb attack. The CM also directed the top civil and police officers to make every effort to improve the law and order situation.Citing recent attacks on members of the Meitei community in the troubled state, the civil society groups demanded that all armed Kuki groups be disarmed prior to any peace efforts. They also urged the state as well as the Central Government to fix accountability for the repeated failures to prevent such attacks. The groups alleged that the Bishnupur incident marks yet another “barbaric” attack on Meitei civilians by Kuki militants as part of a continued campaign to target the community. The responsibility of protecting the lives and property of citizens lies squarely with the Central and Manipur governments, they said, adding that the outcome of policies of appeasement and peace overtures has been evident and that it is time to stop treating militants with kid gloves.Representatives of the civil society groups further alleged that security forces have repeatedly failed to act decisively against militants since ethnic violence erupted in Manipur in May 2023.They pointed out that several incidents of violence had occurred in close proximity to security forces’ camps, including protests in Bishnupur earlier this week, in which two protesters were killed after security personnel opened fire. This, they alleged, createed an impression among the local population that security forces were going soft on Kuki militants.
