Former Akal Takht Jathedar and head granthi of Golden Temple, Giani Raghbir Singh, on Wednesday levelled allegations of corruption against Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Badals while giving a call to hold Sarbat Khalsa.Addressing a press conference, Giani Raghbir Singh said that he was aware that his accusations could lead to his removal from the post. “I am an employee of the SGPC. But I am sitting on a position which was once held by Baba Budha ji and hence, I am fulfilling a responsibility of apprising the sangat of the administrative misconduct taking place within the pious Sikh body,” he said.“The management of the affairs of Sikh Panth has been vested with one family for over many years. Rampant corruption is going on within the SGPC with its properties being sold out wrongfully. Tenants have been sub-letting shops for higher consideration. Even though the fee for ‘akhand path’ is Rs 8,500, it is being conducted at special locations seeking a bribe of as high as Rs 5 lakh. The employees who were involved in this bribery were given better positions even after the expose,” he said.Raising the issue of 328 missing ‘saroops’ of Guru Granth Sahib, he sought clarity and accountability from the SGPC.Reacting to the allegations, AAP leader and Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains raised serious concerns over the functioning of the SGPC. He stated that the allegations levelled by the former Akal Takht Jathedar point to a deep-rooted institutional crisis. Calling the revelations extremely alarming, the AAP leader said these are not routine accusations but evidence of how the supreme Sikh body has drifted from its foundational principles and been reduced to the control of a single family.
