A woman from Uchana Kalan village in Jind district has given birth to her tenth child, a boy, in a second similar incident within a fortnight. Ritu, 24 years married to Surender, a daily wage labourer, already has nine daughters and had been admitted to Jind Civil Hospital on Monday. She delivered the baby boy and said she was happy to have a son, stating, “Now we won’t go for another baby.”Ritu, who is illiterate like her husband, said the family had unanimously decided to try for a boy as their daughters needed a brother to perform certain rituals. She takes care of the children while her husband works to earn a living. Their eldest daughter, 22, is married, and the others are studying — one in Class 11 and two in Class 9.The names of her daughters are Kalpana, Aarti, Bharti, Khushi, Kaafi, Maafi, Mansu, Nainu, and Rajju. Ritu explained that ‘Kaafi’ and ‘Maafi’ mean ‘enough’ and ‘apology’, saying, “We had enough of searching names for girls but hoped God would listen to our wishes for a boy.”On January 5, another woman, Sunita, also gave birth to a baby boy in the Uchana town. She had 10 daughters in 19 years of marriage, and her husband Sanjay Kumar is a daily wage labourer. Sunita’s delivery was high-risk due to severe haemoglobin deficiency, but it was normal.
