Arhtiyas in Punjab will go on on a strike and not procure any wheat, when the procurement season begins on Wednesday. This comes even as the state government claims that all arrangements are in place for the procurement operations. As much as 122 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat is expected to arrive in the grain markets during this season. Punjab has already been sanctioned the cash credit limit of Rs 30,973 crore for buying wheat in April. The commission agents are demanding that they get their due commission, which is 2.5 per cent of the MSP for wheat. The MSP is Rs 2585 per quintal. Though the Centre had recently increased their commission from Rs 46 to Rs 50.75 per quintal, the agents say it is a minimal increase. The other two major concerns that remain for the mammoth exercise is the shifting of 22 lakh metric tonnes of grains from Punjab to the recipient states, and to ensure that farmers from other states do not come to Punjab to sell their wheat here.Directing the district food supply controllers (DFSCs) to keep a hawk’s eye to ensure that wheat from outside the state is not sold in the mandis, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak emphasised that special vigil be maintained especially in the border districts. This comes even as the state government continues to wait for the Centre to increase the lifting of previous years’ foodgrain stocks by deploying additional trains.Official sources in the Food and Civil Supplies Department have told The Tribune that they had about 100 LMT of space available to store this year’s grains.“Last year, the Centre had shifted 21 LMT of grains during the wheat season, and this year, too, we are hopeful that old food grain stocks will be lifted soon. Already, movement of grains from Amritsar and Tarn Taran has picked up,” said a source.
