Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of decades of neglect, divisive politics and prioritising family interests over public welfare.Addressing a rally in Gogamukh (Assam), Modi said “power politics and family interests” had always been the top priority for the Congress leadership. He claimed that while one family dominates national politics in Delhi, another holds sway locally, leaving people’s needs unaddressed.Highlighting the party’s poor record in healthcare, the PM said only six medical colleges were built in Assam over 60 to 70 years. Today, the state has 14 medical colleges, with 10 more under construction.Modi further accused the Congress of pursuing divisive policies, citing a proposed Communal Violence Bill before 2014, which he said was intended to appease certain voters and unfairly target the majority community. He alleged that the Congress was attempting to reintroduce a similar law in Assam for electoral gains. He also warned that the Congress plans to help foreigners settle in the state, threatening the rights of indigenous communities.Reiterating his government’s stance, Modi asserted that the BJP-NDA would continue to take action against illegal encroachments on farmers’ lands, tribal areas and forests. He also criticised the Congress for failing to harness Assam’s abundant resources, pointing out that in over six decades of rule, the party had built only three bridges over the Brahmaputra, while the BJP’s “double-engine government” had completed five major bridges in just 10–11 years.Modi also outlined an ambitious roadmap for Assam’s development, emphasising that modern reforms must go hand-in-hand with cultural preservation. He pledged that the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam would fully respect the traditions and rights of tribal communities and areas under the Sixth Schedule, strengthening rather than diluting the state’s cultural identity.Contrasting the BJP’s tenure with that of previous governments, Modi said, “Assam’s youth now lives in an era of peace and good governance, unlike the past that was marked by violence and bomb blasts. Thousands of young people have given up arms and joined the mainstream, contributing to the state’s progress.”The PM said 11 lakh farmers in Assam had received claims worth over Rs 730 crore under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana. “Besides, Assam is poised to become a hub of advanced technology. There was a time when Assam was known globally only for tea. Soon, it will also be known for semiconductor chips,” he said, announcing that chip production in the state will begin soon, boosting Assam’s position in the high-tech manufacturing.
