Around 70 people were killed in an attack on the only functioning hospital in the besieged city of El Fasher, Sudan, World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Sunday.”The appalling attack on Saudi Hospital in El Fasher, Sudan, led to 19 injuries and 70 deaths among patients and companions,” he wrote in a post on X.”At the time of the attack, the hospital was packed with patients receiving care,” he added.Whilst local authorities in North Darfur’s capital had reported comparable numbers on Saturday, Ghebreyesus became the first international authority to confirm the casualty figures.The perpetrators of the attack remained unidentified in his statement, although local officials pointed to the Rapid Support Force rebels as responsible. The RSF has not responded to these accusations, despite their recent threatening activities around El Fasher.
