The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Employees Union (AITUC–AIFEE) on Friday announced a major protest on April 7. The union has warned that it will stop buses and even a train heading towards Bhakra Dam as part of its escalating movement over long-pending demands. The decision was taken during a preparatory meeting attended by the Centre council president of employees, Ashok Kumar Talwara, local unit president Jarnail Singh, Gurnam Singh, and representatives of the Daily Wage Union, including Sani Kumar and Rammilan. The leaders expressed dissatisfaction over what they termed as the continued neglect of employees’ genuine demands by the BBMB management.According to union representatives, employees will stage a protest near the project office on April 7, during which all buses transporting workers to Bhakra Dam will be blocked. In addition, a train heading towards the dam will also be stopped as a mark of protest. The union stated that the move is intended to send a strong message to the authorities, who, they claim, have failed to address their concerns despite repeated memorandums and follow-ups.The leaders emphasised that the demands raised by the union are directly linked to the social security and welfare of employees. However, they alleged that the BBMB management has been consistently delaying action, leading to mounting frustration among the workforce. They said that despite several rounds of discussions and written representations, no concrete steps have been taken so far.Calling the upcoming protest a decisive phase of their agitation, union leaders appealed to all employees and affiliated organisations to unite and participate in large numbers. They urged workers to ensure complete participation in blocking transport services and staging demonstrations to press for their rights. The union has listed several key demands, including payment of production allowance and incentives, regularisation of contractual employees, and resolution of issues related to EPF and CPF deductions. Other demands include implementation of BBMB-equivalent pay scales for employees from other states, addressing concerns of daily wage, part-time and seasonal workers, clearing pending pay fixation dues, introducing cashless medical facilities, and filling vacant posts.Union leaders stated that prolonged delays in addressing these issues have resulted in financial losses for employees and have fuelled resentment within the workforce. They warned that if their demands continue to be ignored, the agitation could be further intensified in the coming days.
