Eminent Bengali actress Koel Mallick, married to film producer Nispal Singh, a Sikh, was today elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha along with three of her Trinamool Congress colleagues.All five RS poll candidates in West Bengal — TMC’s Mallick, Menaka Guruswamy, Babul Supriyo, former DGP Rajeev Kumar and BJP’s ex-state chief Rahul Sinha — got their victory certificates today.Mallick, a prominent Bengali actor, is married into a Sikh family. Her much-publicised wedding with Nispal Singh Rane involved matrimonial rituals at a gurdwara as per Sikh customs in the morning followed by a traditional Bengali wedding in the evening.Supreme Court lawyer Menaka, meanwhile, becomes the first publicly queer MP of India. In Maharashtra also, all seven candidates in the fray — six of the NDA and Sharad Pawar from the Opposition bloc were elected unopposed as there were seven candidates for seven seats falling vacant in April.Among NDA nominees elected were Union minister Ramdas Athawale, BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde and late Ajit Pawar’s son Parth from the NCP.Ramrao Wadkute and Maya Ivnate of the BJP and Jyoti Waghmare of the Shiv Sena were also elected from Maharashtra.Elections will be held on March 16 for Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant in Bihar (five vacancies and six candidates); Haryana (two vacancies and three candidates) and Odisha (four vacancies and five candidates).In Himachal Pradesh, Congress’ Anurag Sharma, Kangra district chief, was elected unopposed.In all 37 Rajya Sabha seats are falling vacant in April for which elections were notified earlier. These seats are falling vacant in ten states.In seven states today (barring Haryana, Bihar and Odisha), candidates were elected unopposed. These states are Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh.
