Liverpool vs Brentford preview
It’s a day of departures at Anfield as Liverpool round off a disappointing season against Brentford.
The Reds end the campaign trophyless after failing to mount a serious challenge in either domestic or European competition despite spending around £450million last summer.
Supporters will also bid farewell to Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, two players who have been at the heart of Liverpool’s success over the past nine years.
Their final task will be ensuring Liverpool secure Champions League qualification for next season.
That objective was made significantly easier thanks to Erling Haaland’s stoppage-time equaliser against Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
Liverpool head into the final day three points clear of the Cherries with a six-goal advantage in goal difference, meaning only a defeat combined with a huge swing would deny them a top-five finish.
A win could still see them climb above Aston Villa into fourth place if Unai Emery’s side lose to Manchester City, although that hardly feels like major motivation given the expectations surrounding the club at the start of the season.
Pressure also continues to mount on manager Arne Slot after two defeats in the last three matches, while Salah’s recent comments about Liverpool needing to become a “heavy metal attacking team” again have only added to the noise around Anfield.
As for Brentford, they will not be short of motivation following an excellent campaign under Keith Andrews.
Many expected the Bees to struggle after the departures of Thomas Frank, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, but instead they head into the final day sitting ninth and knowing victory could yet secure European football next season.

We’re backing Liverpool to end the campaign on a reasonably positive note with a win and both teams to score at 15/8 with Betfair.
As mentioned, the Reds do not have loads to play for in terms of league position, but there will still be plenty of emotion around Anfield with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson saying goodbye.
Liverpool should also fancy their chances against a Brentford side who have lost momentum at the worst possible time. The Bees looked on course for Europe not long ago, but have managed just one win in their last 10 matches in all competitions.
Keith Andrews’ side have also lost three of their last five away games, while Liverpool have remained strong at Anfield, winning five of their last eight home matches with only Paris Saint-Germain leaving with victory.
The Reds have also won all four home meetings with Brentford since the Bees returned to the Premier League, but the visitors should still fancy getting on the scoresheet given Liverpool are without a clean sheet in six matches, conceding 12 goals during that run.
