The confrontation between the treasury and opposition benches in the Lok Sabha escalated on Tuesday, as women members of the BJP wrote to Speaker Om Birla, urging action against opposition MPs who blocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seat during the February 4 proceedings. The letter comes a day after opposition women MPs sent a similar note to the Speaker, alleging unfairness in his remarks that blamed them for the February 4 chaos. The BJP women MPs’ letter demanded “strictest possible action, under the rules, against those opposition MPs who have committed such heinous acts within the House premises and brought disrepute to our democratic institutions.”“We wish to express our profound gratitude and admiration for the exemplary manner in which you upheld and protected the dignity, decorum, and sanctity of the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the Honourable President’s Address on February 4, 2026,” the letter states.“On that day, the entire House, and indeed the entire nation, witnessed one of the most unfortunate and regrettable incidents inside the Lok Sabha chamber. We saw members of the opposition party not only entering the well of the House but also climbing onto the Speaker’s table, tearing up papers, and throwing them towards the Speaker.”The letter adds that certain women members crossed over to the other side with aggressive demeanour and banners and placards in their hands.“They not only laid a siege of the seat of the Hon’ble Prime Minister but also moved deep inside the treasury benches where senior Ministers are seated,” the MPs said in the letter. The events forced Speaker Birla to ask PM Modi not to enter the House, resulting in the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address being passed without the Prime Minister’s reply. While the opposition has alleged that the Speaker’s claims regarding unruly conduct by women MPs were exaggerated, the Lok Sabha secretariat maintained that the threat to the Prime Minister was imminent, and the Speaker’s intervention was necessary to protect the dignity of the House.Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met the Speaker on Monday, requesting time to intervene on issues including the behaviour of women MPs as a way to break the logjam in the House.Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said Rahul Gandhi would be allowed to speak, but added that other leaders would also speak only if Congress agrees to maintain order in the House after Rahul’s intervention.
