More than a year after the recovery of unaccounted cash at his official residence in Delhi led to a political storm and questions around judicial accountability were raised, Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court today submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu. In doing so, Varma escapes a potential proceeding in Parliament to remove him from office. The Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had earlier admitted a motion for Justice Varma’s removal as a high court judge and constituted a three-member committee under the Judges Inquiry Act, 1968, to probe allegations against him.Justice Varma had approached the apex court to challenge the Speaker’s move but the SC rejected his plea and allowed the parliamentary proceeding against him to go on.Out of chances, Justice Varma today resigned from office. On March 22, 2025 then Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna had constituted a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry into discovery of unaccounted currency at Yashwant Varma’s Delhi residence on March 14, 2025, when he was a judge of the Delhi High Court.Subsequent to the probe, Justice Varma was transferred to the Allahabad HC.
