The election for the new Mayor of Chandigarh is set for a triangular contest, with no candidate withdrawing their nomination so far. Saurabh Joshi from BJP, Gurpreet Singh Gabi from the Congress, and Yogesh Dhingra from AAP are contesting the Mayor’s post. For Senior Deputy Mayor, Jasmanpreet Singh (BJP), Sachin Galav (Congress), and Manuar Khan (AAP) are in the fray. Suman Sharma (BJP), Nirmala Devi (Congress), Jaswinder Kaur (AAP), and Ramchander Yadav (AAP, independent) are contesting for Deputy Mayor. To win the Mayor’s election, a party needs 19 votes. With recent joinings, BJP has 18 councillors, the Congress has 6, and AAP has 11. The MP also has one vote, making BJP and the Congress-AAP alliance tied at 18 votes each. If they contest separately, BJP might win easily, but a joint contest would make it interesting. The Municipal Corporation Act allows a toss to decide in case of a tie. This time, the election will be held through a show of hands. The uncertainty over a Congress-AAP alliance has kept BJP on its toes. Despite both parties declaring separate contests, BJP isn’t taking chances, having moved its councillors to Panchkula.Congress President HS Lucky stated that the party will contest the election as a symbolic fight, with their main aim being to defeat BJP in the next MC election at the end of the year. AAP president Vijay Pal Singh expressed confidence that his party will win all three posts, saying they will fight on all fronts. BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra is optimistic about his party’s chances, claiming they will win all three posts.Dr Ramneek Singh Bedi, nominated councillor, has been designated as the presiding authority for the Mayor’s election meeting. The election process starts at 11 am, with councillors required to raise their hands clearly when their choice is called.
