Amid a continuing deadlock over seat-sharing in Tamil Nadu, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday met Chief Minister MK Stalin at his camp office, signalling a renewed push to resolve differences between the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).Chidambaram, accompanied by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief K Selvaperunthagai, held an hour-long discussion with Stalin, who also heads the DMK. Sources said that the meeting focused on ironing out disagreements over seat allocation, with both sides keen to keep the alliance intact.According to a Congress source, negotiations are at a crucial stage, with a final decision expected soon. While the DMK had initially proposed a limited share, including a Rajya Sabha berth, the Congress had pushed for a significantly higher number of seats. The demand reportedly stood at 39 seats, though the party is now understood to be considering a compromise formula of 28 seats along with two Rajya Sabha positions.DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said the party leadership remained committed to continuing the alliance and was working towards a mutually acceptable outcome. He indicated that discussions were ongoing and a resolution could emerge shortly.Earlier in the day, Selvaperunthagai met Chidambaram before the two leaders proceeded together for talks with Stalin, underlining the urgency within the Congress to break the impasse. The negotiations had initially been led by the Congress’ Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar, who headed a seat-sharing committee that presented its demands to the DMK team, led by party treasurer TR Baalu. However, after the first round of discussions, Chodankar made it clear that the DMK’s offer of 25 seats fell short of expectations. In a strategic shift, the Congress leadership has now tasked Chidambaram with directly engaging the DMK top brass to steer the talks towards a settlement, replacing the earlier plan of sending a five-member delegation led by Chodankar.
