Arhtiyas across Punjab have decided to continue their strike for the time being, even as their meeting with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann failed to yield any positive outcome.During the meeting with the Chief Minister, which lasted for over an hour, the arhtiyas refused to end their strike till the issue of their commission was resolved. The CM had appealed to them to withdraw their strike keeping in view the interest of Punjab and the people so that the wheat farmers did not have to face any problem at the procurement centres.The arhtiyas would meet the CM again on April 6. Vijay Kalra, president of the Federation of Arhtiyas Association of Punjab, said the strike would not be withdrawn until the government announced 2.5 per cent commission to them for wheat procurement. “Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann assured that he will raise the issue with the Centre,” he added.Meanwhile, 74 tonne wheat reached various mandis across the state on the first day of procurement season. According to information available with The Tribune, wheat arrival was reported only in Rajpura, Patiala, Banur and Mohali districts. Of the total arrivals, 50 MT was purchased by the government agencies. For this rabi marketing season, the government has set a target of purchasing 122 lakh metric tonnes of wheat.The commission agents are demanding that they should get 2.5 per cent commission on the wheat MSP, which is Rs 2,585 per quintal. Though the Union Government had recently increased the commission of arhtiyas from Rs 46 to Rs 50.75 per quintal, the agents said the hike was not enough.
