Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday sought to put to rest speculation about tensions within the party after holding an extended meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in Parliament. The meeting, held in Kharge’s chamber in the Parliament House complex, lasted over an hour and was also attended by Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, said sources. It came against the backdrop of reports suggesting Tharoor was unhappy with sections of the party leadership and his perceived ‘sidelining’ in Kerala politics.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Tharoor described the interaction as constructive and positive, stressing that there were no outstanding differences with the leadership. He said the discussion with Kharge and Gandhi was cordial and forward-looking, and made it clear that there was complete alignment going ahead. “All is well. We are moving together and there is nothing more to add,” Tharoor said, signalling an attempt to draw a line under recent speculation.Responding to questions on whether the issue of a CM face for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections figured in the talks, Tharoor dismissed the suggestion. He said he was not seeking any position and remained focused on his role as a Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram, a constituency he is representing for the fourth consecutive term.Tharoor said his priority remained parliamentary work and safeguarding the interests of his constituents. He added that he was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting with the party’s top leadership. The outreach follows his absence from a key Congress strategy meeting on Kerala last week, which had triggered fresh talk of internal unease. Sources close to Tharoor had then pointed to a series of events that had left him disillusioned, including what was seen as repeated attempts by state leaders to marginalise him.One such flashpoint, sources said, was a ‘Maha Panchayath’ event in Kochi on January 19, where Rahul Gandhi acknowledged several senior leaders on stage but did not refer to Tharoor, despite his presence on the dais.Tharoor has also faced criticism within the party over past remarks on India-Pakistan relations and diplomatic engagement after the Pahalgam attack, which some leaders said did not fully reflect the Congress line. He has consistently maintained that there was no divergence on foreign policy and that bipartisan consensus was essential on such issues.
