The Congress on Thursday released its third list of 22 candidates for the Assam Assembly elections, sharpening its pitch in key constituencies across lower and central Assam.Among the prominent names in the list are Manik Chandra Brahma from Kokrajhar (ST), Aftab Uddin Mollah from Jaleswar, Pradip Sarkar from Abhayapuri, Rafie Daimary from Tamulpur (ST) and Dr Asif Mohamad Nazar from Laharighat. The party has also fielded Joyonto Khaund from Rongonadi, Ghana Buragohain from Lakhimpur and Roselina Tirkey from Khumtai, indicating a mix of experienced faces and local leaders.With this, the Congress has further expanded its slate after announcing earlier lists. The party had on Saturday released its second list of 23 candidates, taking the total number of nominees declared at that stage to 65 for the 126-member Assembly. The first list of 42 candidates was announced on March 3, with state party chief Gaurav Gogoi fielded from Jorhat.The Congress is leading an Opposition alliance that includes the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Assam Jatiya Parishad, while the CPI (ML) Liberation has extended its support.
