Cop killed, over 13 hurt in Surajkund fair gate, swing collapse

A police officer on duty was killed and at least 13 persons, including a child and an ASI, were injured after a swing and Gate No. 2 collapsed at the Surajkund International Crafts Fair here on Saturday evening.The deceased was identified as Inspector Jagdish Kumar (58) of Palwal Police, who was deployed for fair duty and posted at the police lines in Palwal. Prasad was a resident of Dingra village in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. He joined the Haryana Armed Police in 1989. He is survived by two daughters and a son, all unmarried and currently pursuing their studies. After completing 36 years of service in the Haryana Police, he was due to retire in March.District Deputy Commissioner Ayush Sinha and Tourism MD Parth Gupta reached the spot soon after receiving information. Arrangements were made for the immediate treatment of the injured. According to police, the swing accident occurred around 6 pm, when nearly 19 persons were on the ride. The collapse triggered panic at the fairgrounds and rescue operations were launched promptly.During the rescue operation, a stall operator, Raghav, was struck by a swing grill, injuring his shoulder. “I was at my stall when the swing got stuck. I rushed over and helped rescue seven to eight people, but in the process, I injured my shoulder. The swing later collapsed,” said Raghav.Earlier, around 5 pm, Gate No. 2 of the fairgrounds had suddenly collapsed, injuring two persons — Sumit Malhotra, a resident of Sector 28, and a child.A senior police officer said nine injured persons were rushed to a nearby private hospital, while four were taken to BK Civil Hospital.“The inspector died while rescuing people. The injured are being treated in hospitals. The incidents are being investigated and strict action will be taken against those responsible. An FIR will also be registered,” the DC said.The investigation so far has revealed that one end of the swing broke, leaving it hanging about 2-3 feet above the ground, while the other side remained higher. Soon after the accident, shopkeepers and policemen from nearby areas rushed to rescue those trapped.Among them was Inspector Jagdish Prasad, the security incharge of the swing complex, a senior police officer said.“As people were being taken off the swing, it broke from the other end as well and fell to the ground. Several people were caught in the structure, and the inspector sustained serious injuries. He later succumbed,” the officer added.“I am deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident that occurred during the Surajkund Mela in Faridabad. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the person who lost their life in this accident. Necessary instructions have also been issued to the concerned authorities to ensure proper and immediate treatment for those injured,” posted CM Nayab Saini on X.He added, “The Haryana Government is working with utmost urgency and sensitivity to provide all possible assistance to the injured and their families.”
