A Faridkot court has framed charges against 12 out of 17 accused in the murder case of Gurpreet Singh, a former associate of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh. The police have invoked stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in the case. Amritpal Singh is among the accused, but the investigation against him remains pending as he’s currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail, Assam, under the National Security Act (NSA). Four other nominated accused are reportedly abroad.According to the prosecution, Gurpreet Singh allegedly knew about Amritpal Singh’s purported links with gangsters Jaipal Bhullar and designated terrorist Arsh Dalla, who’s also an accused in the case. The police claim Amritpal Singh conspired to have Gurpreet Singh eliminated in October 2024, fearing exposure of these links. The defence counsel criticised the Special Investigation Team (SIT), arguing that it hadn’t made progress in the probe against Amritpal Singh despite knowing he was detained in the Dibrugarh jail. The defence also argued that Amritpal Singh wasn’t summoned for questioning, and the police failed to file a chargesheet against him.The police will now complete the investigation against Amritpal Singh and submit a separate supplementary challan. Charges against him will be framed after questioning and examination of witnesses. The court has fixed February 3 for prosecution evidence.
