A man allegedly involved in cow trafficking and slaughter was arrested late Monday night in Indri near the Western Yamuna Canal after he opened fire on police during an interception, officials said. No injuries were reported. The accused has been identified as Nakim of Rana Majra village in Panipat. According to police, he is the mastermind behind a cow trafficking and slaughter racket and was allegedly responsible for dumping cattle heads and body parts in the Western Yamuna Canal and Dhanaura escape in the Indri area last month. The incident had triggered widespread anger among locals, who protested twice demanding the arrest of all involved.Four other accused—including Azam, Nawab, and Shehzad (brothers from Saharanpur, UP) and Chand Bagri of Babain, Kurukshetra—had already been arrested in connection with the case.Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarniya, along with two DSPs—Rajiv Kumar and Satish Gautam—and forensic experts visited the crime scene to oversee the investigation.CIA-1 in-charge Inspector Sandeep Singh said that, based on a tip-off, Nakim and an accomplice were intercepted while collecting cattle in Indri. When asked to surrender, the accused opened fire, narrowly missing the officers. A bullet struck a police vehicle, but no one was injured.Nakim was arrested, while his accomplice managed to escape. Police are actively tracing the absconding accomplice.Singh explained that the gang’s modus operandi involved picking up stray cattle or those near markets, slaughtering them along canal embankments, and selling the meat. To conceal their identities, they allegedly dumped cattle heads and body parts into the canal. The racket came to light last month when over 20 cattle heads and body parts were found in the Western Yamuna Canal and Dhanaura escape between March 17 and 21, sparking outrage among locals and cow activists. The dumping prompted highway blockades and a panchayat at Indri Rest House, where villagers issued a two-day ultimatum to police for the arrests. An FIR was registered under the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, 2015, and Section 238(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Indri Police Station.
