A special court meant to hold trials in cases involving MPs and MLAs here on Tuesday adjourned the hearing in a defamation case against BJP’s Mandi Lok Sabha member and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut to February 24.The court passed the order as prosecution witness Jasveer Singh, a farm activist, could not attend the proceedings due to agricultural work.In the previous hearing on January 27, witnesses Surjit Singh and Jasveer Singh were examined. However, their cross-examination was deferred at the request of the accused’s counsel. Both were bound down for February 10 to conclude the cross-examination.The counsel for the complainant, Raghbir Singh Behniwal, said the counsel for the accused had requested to cross-examine the witnesses one-by-one but Jasveer Singh was not available today. The case pertains to a 2020 tweet posted by Kangana during a farmers’ protest, in which she shared a photograph of elderly farmer Mahinder Kaur of Bahadurgarh Jandian village here, mistakenly identifying her as Shaheen Bagh protester Bilkis Bano and alleging that such women were “available for Rs 100” to participate in protests. The remark triggered widespread outrage, following which Mahinder Kaur filed a defamation complaint in January 2021.
