The daily ordeal of navigating the congested stretches between Gurugram and Delhi is on the verge of a historic transformation. In a sweeping move to decongest the National Capital Region (NCR), the Central Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to turn three major highway corridors — including the high-traffic Mehrauli-Gurugram (MG) Road — into signal-free zones. This infrastructure overhaul is projected to slash current peak-hour travel times from over an hour to a mere 15 minutes, fundamentally altering the lifestyle and economy of the millennium city.Addressing the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Harsh Malhotra, confirmed that major intersections like Ashram-Badarpur and Mehrauli-Gurugram will see the construction of multiple flyovers and advanced interchanges. “Currently, because of congestion, it takes around one to one-and-a-half hours. This travel time will be reduced. Similarly, travel time between Mehrauli and Gurgaon will be reduced to barely 15 minutes instead of the current one hour after this stretch becomes signal-free,” Malhotra stated, highlighting the government’s focus on seamless mobility.In tandem with Delhi’s upgrades, Gurugram is preparing for a massive revamp of its own arterial networks. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to take over the 5.5-km MG Road stretch from IFFCO Chowk to the Delhi border. Plans include turning this critical artery into a ‘Model Road’ featuring a multi-level interchange or cloverleaf at IFFCO Chowk, effectively removing the red lights that have long tested the patience of commuters. This revamp is strategically timed with the convergence of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and expanded Metro lines at IFFCO Chowk, positioning it as the ultimate transit hub of NCR.Real estate experts predict that this unprecedented proximity will trigger a massive rental boom in Gurugram. As the “15-minute commute” becomes a reality, professionals working in South Delhi and Central Delhi are expected to flock toward Gurugram’s premium residential sectors, seeking better amenities without the penalty of long travel hours. This shift is set to change the facet of NCR travel, turning the once-distinct cities into a single, fluid urban corridor. With the reduction of bottlenecks at Kalindi Kunj and the Punjabi Bagh-Tikri border also on the horizon, the era of signal-free transit is finally arriving, promising to save millions of man-hours and fuel a new wave of economic growth across the capital region.
