Digital transformation in social sector: Challenges and opportunities

India’s social sector is increasingly adopting digital tools to improve services like healthcare and education. Digital health startups, online education platforms, and payment systems are helping people in remote areas. The Digital India campaign, along with advancements in AI, cloud computing, and 5G, is driving this growth, making India the second-largest online population globally by 2025. These changes offer significant opportunities for nonprofits.”Despite the potential, nonprofits face challenges such as a lack of awareness about digital tools, difficulty attracting skilled talent, and limited funding for digital projects,” said expert Anirban Chaudhury. Rizwan Koita, another expert, echoed these concerns, saying that a significant hurdle for nonprofits is cultivating a culture of digital transformation. “It’s about recognizing the importance of digital, committing to investments, and integrating technology as a core part of the organization’s strategy,” he explained. Another expert Rekha Koita pointed out that many organizations struggle with deciding where technology can be applied effectively within their operations. Even when areas are identified, challenges in integration and choosing the right technologies arise. “The key is to understand where technology can truly add value and to approach the process strategically,” she said.
