Tension prevailed on Jaito Road in Kotkapura after a dispute erupted over the installation of a mobile phone tower in a residential area, leading to a clash during a protest staged by local residents.Residents of the locality had been holding a sit-in on the main road, opposing the proposed installation of a mobile tower on private land in the area. The protesters alleged that the tower was being set up without proper permissions and posed potential health risks to people living nearby.During the protest, an argument broke out between the demonstrators and some youths who were attempting to pass through the area. The verbal spat soon escalated into a physical altercation, during which chairs lying at the protest site were reportedly hurled. The situation turned chaotic for some time.On receiving information about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police officials said the matter is being investigated and appropriate action would be taken as per law.Residents claimed that despite submitting written complaints to the Deputy Commissioner, the Municipal Council and other authorities concerned, the equipment for the mobile tower was brought to the site, prompting them to intensify their protest.Former Municipal Councillor Jaspal Singh alleged that the mobile tower was being installed without mandatory approvals. He further accused certain youths of indulging in hooliganism during the protest and demanded strict action against those responsible. He reiterated the residents’ demand that the tower should not be installed at the site.The police said further proceedings would depend on the outcome of the inquiry.
