Dissent is brewing within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Muktsar district, with a section of party leaders, including the district vice-president, openly demanding the immediate removal of district president Satish Asija. The disgruntled leaders have accused Asija of sidelining senior party workers. In protest, they convened a meeting at the party office in Malout, where they expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of the district president and warned of their resignations if their demand is not addressed.Som Nath Kalra, vice-president of the BJP’s Muktsar district unit, said party workers were feeling neglected. “Workers are not even informed about party meetings. With municipal council and Assembly elections approaching, the cadre is demoralised, which may harm the party’s prospects. We need a president who can take everyone along,” he said. The leaders claimed they had tried to contact state president Sunil Jakhar but received no response. “We could not speak to the state president, but we have informed acting state president Ashwani Sharma about the ground situation,” they added.Responding to the allegations, Asija said he had already completed his three-year term but was continuing in the role as the party was yet to appoint a successor or grant him a second term. “In several districts, new presidents are yet to be named. If anyone has issues with my functioning, they should approach the party leadership instead of going to the media. I have already informed senior leaders about their activities,” he said.Asija added, “This is the home district of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, and one has to take every step cautiously. The party leadership is aware of everything. Those who held a meeting against me included the district vice-president, general secretary, and some other office-bearers and former office-bearers.”On this, Ashwani Dawar Happy, former vice-president of the Malout Municipal Council, said, “The district president is so arrogant that he does not even think of speaking to party leaders and workers. Had there been someone else, he would have held a meeting with the disgruntled party members.”
