The police have booked former Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar of AAP, his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar and his personal assistant Dilbagh Singh on charges of abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation in connection with the suicide by Punjab Warehousing Corporation district manager Gagandeep Singh Randhawa at his residence here yesterday. The incident has triggered a political storm in Punjab with opposition parties training guns at the AAP government. Prominent political leaders visited the aggrieved family at its residence at Ranjit Avenue here and lodged a protest over the delay in the registration of an FIR, which was registered at midnight.Upinder Kaur, wife of the deceased, in her complaint to the police, alleged that the former AAP minister, his father and PA Dilbagh Singh physically assaulted the victim, hit him with a pistol, besides humiliating him, which forced him to commit suicide. She said her husband had been under intense pressure for the past over a week over the allotment of warehouse construction tenders. She alleged that the former minister, along with his father and personal assistant, repeatedly forced Randhawa to favour them in the tender process. The complaint claims that following Randhawa’s refusal to violate rules, he was subjected to continuous threats, intimidation and mental harassment. She alleged that the suspects threatened to harm him and his family, including children, using gangsters if he did not follow their instructions. The suspects also allegedly forced him to record a false video statement at gunpoint.Unable to bear the sustained pressure, Randhawa allegedly took poison early Saturday morning (5.30 am) and recorded a short video before his death, which later surfaced on social media. In the purported video, he said he took celphos due to Bhullar’s pressure.Several leaders, including SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, visited the aggrieved family and expressed solidarity with it.Upinder Kaur, along with her family, demanded the immediate arrest of Bhullar and the other suspects in the case.“The family will not permit the post-mortem until Bhullar and the other suspects are taken into custody,” she said. “We want justice. The post-mortem will only be conducted and the body cremated after the arrest of the former minister,” she said. She said had the Punjab Government been serious, it would not have delayed the registration of the FIR, adding that the case was only registered at midnight. She demanded police protection, stating that their lives were at risk at the hands of the former minister. “If anything happens to me or my family, the AAP government will be responsible,” she said.Police officials, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Ravinderpal Singh Sandhu, visited the family and tried to convince it for the post-mortem. However, the family was adamant. Speaking to the media, he said the post-mortem was mandatory for further action. Meanwhile, Bhullar and the other suspects have reportedly gone “underground”.
