Farmers from across Punjab gathered at a Kisan Mahapanchayat in Barnala on Tuesday under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) to press the government to address key agricultural issues.Farm leaders expressed concern over the proposed India-US trade deal and demanded that agriculture and allied sectors be kept outside its ambit.They also called for the withdrawal of the proposed Seeds Bill, alleging that it would adversely affect farmers’ rights.The gathering demanded that river water disputes be resolved according to the riparian principle.Farmers also sought a farm loan waiver and a legal guarantee for procurement of more crops, including vegetables, at the minimum support price (MSP).They also urged the government to ensure the supply of clean drinking water to every household.Prominent farmer leaders present at the event included Balbir Singh Rajewal, Joginder Singh Ugrahan, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, Boota Singh Burj Gill, Rajinder Singh Deep Singh Wala, Manjit Singh Dhaner, Baldev Singh Nihalgarh, Ruldu Singh Mansa and Boota Singh Shadipur.
