In a first-of-its-kind incident, the Border Security Force (BSF) in a joint operation with the Amritsar rural police has seized fake Indian currency notes (FICN) worth Rs 2.5 lakh that were smuggled into the Indian territory using a drone along the Indo-Pak border here.According to police officials, the consignment was recovered during a search operation launched in the jurisdiction of Gharinda police station area following specific intelligence inputs about drone movement from across the border. The troops noticed suspicious activity late in the night and subsequently carried out a combing operation in the area.During the search, personnel recovered a yellow coloured packet containing counterfeit currency notes amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh of Rs 500 denomination. Preliminary investigation suggests that the packet was dropped by a drone originating from the Pakistani side.A senior police official said this is the first recorded instance of fake currency being smuggled via drone in the region, indicating a shift in modus operandi by cross-border smuggling networks, which have so far primarily used drones to push narcotics, arms and ammunition. The recovered notes have been handed over to the police by the BSF for further forensic examination. While the BSF has intensified surveillance along the border, the police have started a probe to trace the intended recipients of the consignment.
