The killing of Ranjit Singh (19) in an encounter with the police in a case linked to Gurdaspur twin murders snowballed into a major controversy on Thursday, with the family refusing to accept his body.Family members said they would take the body only after the state government registered murder charges against the police officers involved in the alleged encounter. The police had on Wednesday shot dead Ranjit and arrested another youth, Dilawar Singh, for their alleged involvement in the murder of an ASI and Home Guard in Gurdaspur. The police had claimed that their associate, Inderjit Singh (20) of Adhian village, was reportedly on the run.Ranjit, a BA-I student, and Dilawar were working online for a Delhi-based company. Both were schoolmates, while Inderjit and Ranjit lived in the same locality at Adhian village.Activists of several trade unions, farm unions and human rights associations reached Ranjit’s house on Thursday morning. The Congress is also planning to hold a protest tomorrow.Ranjit’s uncle Harvinder Singh Malhi said the family had sought the intervention of the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court into the matter.Ranjit’s mother Sukhwinder Kaur said, “They took my son from home, saying they needed to question him in the killing of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar at the Adhian checkpost. They then mercilessly beat him up on the pretext of interrogating him. He died during the interrogation. In an attempt to cover it up, they claimed he died in the encounter. I demand a CBI probe into the role of senior officials involved in the incident. Only then, will we claim his body. I also demand that the post-mortem should be conducted by an independent panel of doctors.”Family members said Ranjit and Dilawar had drinks in nearby Dorangla town hours before the police picked them up. “After drinks, Ranjit returned to Adhian village, where he picked up a quarrel with his mother. She called up Dilawar asking him to come and take Ranjit to his house at Alinangal village. The only crime they committed was that they passed in front of a police checkpost. The police suspected their involvement just because of this,” said Harvinder.Adhian and Alinangal are located two kilometres apart. The police are still to question the five persons who were captured on CCTV cameras riding two motorcycles when the ASI and Home Guard were killed.“Instead of trying to find their whereabouts, they picked up our boys,” said Harvinder.“Ranjit could not have killed a man. Each and every villager can vouch for his good credentials. Neither can Dilawar nor Inderjit commit an offence as serious as murder. The entire truth will come out in an impartial probe,” he said.Dilawar’s father, Dilbagh Singh, a retired Army man who served for 15 years in J&K, said his son faced no financial hardships and would never succumb to greed.Earlier, the police had claimed that the three suspects in the Gurdaspur murders were given money by Pakistan’s ISI.
