A delegation of different farmer organisations, led by Balbir Singh Rajewal and Harjinder Singh Lakhowal, took a vow to protect the Punjab waters at any cost.After paying obeisance at the Golden Temple and Akal Takht on Friday, they made this announcement and added that they would visit each village in the state to sensitise people under the “Jago Punjab” campaign and would hold a massive rally in March-end. They hinted that they would fight for ownership and royalty for the waters of Punjab. They made it clear that they would not hold back from launching an agitation in this regard.Addressing mediapersons here, they said the ill-conceived agreements and wrong policies were responsible for the present mess of river waters in Punjab. He warned that if the people of Punjab did not wake up, then future generations would have to pay a heavy price in the shape of diseases and barren land.The farmer leaders claimed that till now water worth about Rs 16 lakh crore had been given for free to Rajasthan and added that the latter was making profits by selling the same to industries and refineries.
