FIR against 400 over farmers’ clash with police in Bathinda

The police have booked around 400 unidentified persons on charges of murder bid and assault on public servants following a violent clash with activists of the Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) at Jeond village in Rampura Phul block on Wednesday.Both sides allegedly resorted to stone-pelting. The police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the crowd.Earlier, on February 6, the police had registered five cases at three police stations against over 2,000 unidentified persons for allegedly taking a DSP and others hostage, breaking barricades, blocking a national highway and disturbing law and order during a protest.On both occasions, farmers had tried to march to the Bathinda District Administrative Complex to begin an indefinite protest seeking the release of Shagandeep Singh Jeond and Baldev Singh Chauke. The two were arrested in an attempt-to-murder case for allegedly attacking a police team in January last year and have been in jail since April last year.In Wednesday’s violence, two farmers were injured, one with a severe injury on the hand while another suffered a fractured leg. SDM Rampura Phul sustained a minor injury.The police said the injured farmers were yet to record their statements.Farmers later held a protest march at Gobindpura village demanding cancellation of FIRs and a fair probe into the clash.Separately, union leaders said the two activists, though granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, could not be released as a copy of the order was awaited.SKM protest on March 10The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has announced to hold a massive rally at Barnala on March 10, in protest against the inclusion of agri sector in the India-US trade deal.The issues of water sharing, farm loan waiver, electricity, seeds Bills would be taken up, said Raminder Singh Patiala. He also demanded action against the Bathinda SSP for lathicharge on farmers on Wednesday.
